Sian Ka´an Canals and Muyil ruins

Discover tropical bliss and pure relaxation as you float down the Muyil and Chunyaxche Canals

✨ Disconnection & natural bliss

What to expect

Discover tropical bliss and pure relaxation as you float down the Muyil and Chunyaxche Canals. Known for its natural beauty, located inside the spectacular Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

First we traverse the lagoon by boat, then we use a floatation device to enter the canals and enjoy a 40 minute ride being pulled by the current of the ¨lazy river¨ along the mangrove vegetation. A place to enjoy tranquility as you disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, and tune in to peaceful silence, that only nature can provide.

On your way back, you can enjoy a small picnic accompanied by wine or beers whilst watching a beautiful sunset by the lagoon.

To finish we pay a visit to the mayan ruins of Muyil, an ancient port with magnificent structures overlooking the lagoon.

This is a half day tour, to enjoy in the morning or in the afternoon for the sunset experience.

Tour highlights

Beauty and function

Both the Muyil and Chunyaxche canals are more than just pleasing to the eye. Interestingly, both canals were used in pre-hispanic times for commerce, to transport goods from the sea to the land. Some precious commodities traded at the time included jade, obsidian, chocolate, honey, feathers, chewing gum, and salt.

World heritage status

Thanks to its unique biodiversity and fascinating Mayan Culture, In 1987 Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve was declared a World Heritage Property by UNESCO. Sian Ka’an is also part of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) program, which aims to improve the relationship between people and their environment.

Alluring creatures

The ecosystem in Sian Ka’an is truly like no other in the world. The area is home to 379 species of bird, 115 species of mammals, 90 species of native bees, 276 species of crustaceans, 310 species of mosquitoes, 318 species of butterflies, and more than 500 species of fish.
